Become a Top Wedding Planner – Are You Comparing Yourself to Others?

Wedding and Event Planners Networking

Years ago, when I first started my business as a wedding and event planner, I would go to networking events and hear from another planner, in a different niche, how great she was doing.  Of course, I had set my goals very high and wasn’t doing as well as I wanted at the time so I was getting really down on myself.  Then one day I received a call from someone who needed help outside my area of expertise so I referred him to this planner.  She later called to thank me then went onto tell me that  she wasn’t doing well.  I was really surprised because that is not what she had indicated.

Why am I telling you this?  Because I learned some important lessons from the experience that might help you. Here are 4 of them:

Lesson #1 – Set realistic goals

You may have people beating down your door the moment you start your business.  What may be more realistic is your business grows steadily, you are well able to handle the growth and be very successful for a long period of time.

Lesson #2 – Don’t compare yourself to other people

Concentrate on being the best you and the best at what you do.  Don’t worry about how others are doing.  Keep you eyes on your goals, not someone else’s.  (Besides, what they tell you may or may not be true.)

Lesson #3 – Take action

The best thing to do if you are feeling discouraged is to get working on something.  Try a different way of marketing, get out and meet new vendors, do something.

Lesson #4 – Pat yourself on the back every now and then

Congratulate yourself for having the courage to start a business and follow your dream.

Don’t forget that Engagement Season starts this week.  It’s an excellent time to get energized, get out there, and let people know what you do.  Read my previous blog post on how to market your wedding planning business to newly enaged couples if you need ideas.
