Hi Monica,

Thanks for reading my blog.

Here are some ideas:

Are there any wedding and event planners in your area who would be willing to take you on as an intern or apprentice? Check with a local chapter of a wedding planner association such as the Association of Bridal Consultants or June Weddings to find a wedding planner you could approach. These organizations also have certificate programs that you might want to take.

Check with florists and caterers, see if they take on interns, or get a part time job with them. You won’t get much pay but you could gain a lot of insight into how they work with clients and prepare for events.

Consider getting a part-time job working for a bridal gown shop so you learn how to work with brides.

Community colleges and adult education programs sometimes have classes on floral design, event planning and catering that are taught by local professionals and taking them would give you a good education.

Read magazines and books on planning weddings. Keep a clippings file and collect photos and tips that will help you plan weddings in the future.

Once you have learned some basics, find out if you can help out at weddings of family and friends. Don't over commit, just volunteer for the tasks you know how to do. If they are happy with you, request testimonials and take photos to use on your website or portfolio when you create you business.

Don’t forget to also study how to start and run a business.

Hope these ideas help.

Feel free to ask more questions.

Warmly,

Sharon

Hi!
I love your blog! Its obvious that you love what you do and it shows in your desire to help and give tips to others.

So what would you recommend for me? I have always wanted to do this but have zero experience. I have a feeling i'd be great at it but dont know how to get started. I'm 23 and live outside of Chicago, I'm a quick learner and believe I have great potential, but it just seems like such a volatile industry and so hard to get into... how do i get started with no experience?
