Become a Top Wedding Planner – Selecting the Wedding Officiant

Bride and Groom with their Wedding Officiant

Although many brides and grooms have their wedding in a house of worship with a wedding officiant whom they know, there will be occasions when a couple will need your help finding someone to marry them.  Many times this could be because they are having a civil ceremony.  In a civil ceremony, couples can  blend elements and traditions from different cultures and religions, write their own vows, and include special readings that they may not be able to do in a house of worship.  They can also have the ceremony anywhere they chose, a home, hotel, community center, yacht, the possibilities are endless.

If you are working with a couple who need you to help them select an officiant, here are a few tips to share:

  • Begin the process early, good officiants, like good venues, get booked up very fast.
  • The officiant is a very important part of their wedding day, they need to choose someone who makes them feel comfortable.
  • Find out how much experience the officiant has, how many weddings they have done and the type of ceremonies they usually do.
  • Ask for references and contact recently married couples.

Officiants can also help write vows or customize a ceremony to incorporate vows the couple has written.  The bride and groom should know what they want from their officiant before they begin the interview process.

Wonderful! Good ideas! Also, the couple should make sure that the officiant is a professional and is not just performing the rituals as a hobby! They should meet with the officiant and find out about their education, background and experience. The officiant IS the most important part of the wedding, and couples should take their time to find the person who is exactly the right fit for their own style and wishes.

Thank you for giving us more information about what a couple should look for in a wedding officiant.
