Eddie Money Performs at Craig Duswalt’s RockStar System for Success Seminar

I picked up ideas for wedding planning businesses at Craig Duswalt’s RockStar System for Success Seminar this past weekend. Craig is one of the few people who can legitimately use the word “rockstar”. He worked for the band Air Supply for seven years then was the personal manager for Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses for four years before he decided to settle down and have a family. He owned a successful advertising business and is now a speaker, seminar producer and teaches entrepreneurs to be rockstars in their industries. (He and his wife, Natasha, are two of the nicest people you could ever meet.)

As you can imagine, Craig had many wild stories of the rockstar life. But what was the most interesting insight is that a band is a business and musicians and singers are business people. Here are three things they do to be successful that wedding planners can do:

RockStars keep daily schedules

They may not go to work until ten o’clock at night but they still have schedules. Craig said Axl Rose had a daily schedule that included vocal exercises and meditation, things that helped him do well on stage. If they can keep a daily routine while on the road, you should be able to set and keep a daily schedule for your business. Dedicate time for meeting new vendors, marketing online and offline and studying and researching to learn more about planning weddings and running a successful business.

RockStars are always working on their marketing

Even on the road, the bands had daily marketing meetings to come up with ideas for promoting themselves and selling more concert tickets. Their ideas were often “out-of-the-box”, such as doing something outrageous a few nights before a concert in order to get press and boost ticket sales, which you don’t want to do. However, if you don’t take the time to work on marketing ideas, even when you are busy with clients, you’ll find yourself without clients.

RockStars have multiple streams of income

They actually don’t make much money with their CD’s, a bulk of their money comes from concerts and merchandise. Most of your income will come from planning weddings and doing consultations but you can increase your income selling by expanding your business. Sell wedding invitations and accessories. Or, plan wedding related events such as engagement parties, bachelor and bachelorette parties and rehearsal dinners. And, if you stay in touch with your brides, you can offer to plan anniversary, birthday and other milestone events in their lives or the lives of their families and friends. Once your wedding planning business is established, it’s important to create a series of different services and products so you can generate more income.

Above is a video clip of Eddie Money performing at the seminar on Friday night. Craig always has a celebrity rockstar at his events, usually they just sit down and do an interview but Eddie surprised everyone by also singing eight songs. His daughter, Jessica, in the video above, also sang two songs on her own.

Below is a photo of Eddie Money and me at the cocktail party after his performance.
