The movie “Sex and the City 2” came out last week and will be a topic of conversation for many fans for weeks to come. There was a wedding in the movie with a black and white theme, which certainly gave many ideas for dress (Carrie in a tux, the chorus in white tie and tails) and decor (of course, swans don’t have to be live at weddings that you plan). But the movie may also get your brides interested in having a Moroccan themed wedding since the movie involves a trip to Morocco (in the movie they say they are in Abu Dhabi).

Here are some ideas for carrying out a Moroccan theme:

Colors 

• Rich, deep colors such such as orange, magenta, purple and gold
• Accent colors can be in jewel-toned blues and greens
• Colors can be used in decor and in wedding attire, for example, bridesmaids can wear the rich tones even if the bride wants to wear a white gown

Decor

• Embroidered and beaded fabrics, drapes and linens
• Candles in jeweled or mirrored-tile holders
• Tables set with gold flatware and chargers
• A cocktail area with  Moroccan rugs, floor pillows and ottomans
• If your budget allows, Raj Tents has beautiful tents with a Moroccan theme. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them, they are very professional and very nice to work with.

Food

• Flavorful food using spices such as ginger, turmeric, saffron, paprika, cumin and cinnamon. (Remember that Miranda and Carrie were shopping for spices when Carrie ran into Aidan.)
• Talk to a caterer who can create a Moroccan menu that will appeal to many guests
• Make sure the bride and groom taste everything before they finalize the menu

If a bride likes the ideas of a Moroccan themed event but doesn’t want her wedding to be that colorful and dramatic, you can suggest she use the theme in one of her wedding related parties; the engagement party, rehearsal dinner or after party.

Did you taken time off from wedding planning to see the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire?  With the popularity of this movie, I recently decided to check out a couple of Indian films that had weddings in them.  The first was Bride and Prejudice, Bollywood’s  take on Jane Austen’s book Pride and Prejudice.  It’s a fun movie, full of music, dancing, romance and weddings.

The other movie is Monsoon Wedding.  It is more serious but shows the traditions surrounding an Indian wedding.  Be sure you watch all the way through all of the closing credits or you’ll miss seeing some of the wedding ceremony.

It’s always good to watch films with weddings in them to get inspiration for your work. The more you know, the more valuable you are to your clients.
