Wedding Planners – 5 Mistakes To Avoid When Starting Your Wedding Planning Business

Startup Mistakes New Wedding Planners Should Avoid

From your emails I know that many of you are planning to start you wedding planning business at the beginning of the new year. I thought it would be helpful to you to learn some of the mistakes other new wedding planners have made so you don’t do the same.

Here are 5 mistakes you need to avoid in order to be successful:

Mistake #1 – Starting without a business plan

You wouldn’t create a wedding without having a plan and you shouldn’t create a business without also having a plan. Know and write down the purpose and vision for your business, your goals, who your target brides are and how you are going to reach them.

Mistake #2 – Working without contracts

Written contracts protect you by spelling out expectations and payment information. Professional wedding planners have detailed contracts that outline the services they are providing so the client is clear about what they are getting and what they owe.

Mistake #3 – Focusing on the wrong numbers

Today, too many new wedding planners get caught up seeing success as the number of Facebook fans and Twitter and Pinterest followers they have. It’s great to have high numbers in all of those areas but remember that you are in business to make money. Find and focus on doing the things that bring in the most revenue.

Mistake #4 – Charging too little

I know you love planning weddings and would do it for free but if you are going to be a professional wedding planner, you need to charge what you are worth.

Mistake #5 – Trying to win over every bride

Some brides don’t appreciate wedding planners and don’t want to hire you or don’t want to hire you unless you give a deep discount on your services. Don’t spend time trying to change them, market to brides who understand your value.

If you’ve started your business and notice that you are already making mistakes, don’t worry. Learn from what you did then just get yourself back on track towards success.
